View Full Version : We're Done...Getting out of racing...
DARRIN P/S 5006

After adding up the cost of getting a competitive P/S bullet and doing it out of my back pocket and having no luck in finding a sponsor i think i'm gonna get out while i'm ahead. I think that the NMRA heads-up P/S class is great but not if i'm not atleast in the top half of the field it's just not worth it for me. I'm just a very competitive person and i don't take this as a hobby. Dragracing & mustangs will always be my first love.. My Dad did it the same way when he raced at U.S.30 Dragstrip and always told me" If you can't atleast be competitive then it's not worth doing"....I would like to thank the following people..
1.. Ed curtis at FTI for helping me with my heads, cam & valvetrain stuff..
2.. Brian at AFM for giving me a Clutch & flywheel to race with this year I'll always remember that you're first person to "GIVE ME" something to race with and i thank you very much for that.
3..The swill racing crew (DALE) for alot of advise on things i needed to know.
4..Erin and Dave over at "Whites pit's stop in lansing with discounting alot of extra stuff i needed this year.
5..My good friends that i've meet over the past year in F/S P/S R/S REN..
6..Paul( p302stang) my buddies from Mich who helped me over the past 2 years,
The car will sit because it's already done and ready to roll if i ever get money and/or sponsorship to build a "Bullet" to run the car....We'll go back to terrorizing the street of chicago....But we'll be back one day guys..
Thanks

Quiting..... You just got started. I'm sure you have too much time and money invested to sit home on the couch now (J/K).
Besides, Losing in the first round is alot more fun than sitting home and checking stats on Stang Crazy. (no offence Frank!)

We had a car that might have been able to run about 3 yrs ago with what i have now but it's just expensive...I might not quit all together but i gotta get a good rotating assembly and not spend my 10 month old son's college saving on it :D

Darrin,
I think most understand where you're coming from...it's expensive. We got a lot of help on the RS car, but it was still draining....and that was splitting a lot of expenses. Partnerships seem to be getting more and more popular. I hope to see you get out again, was nice to see your name on the qualifying list.

No offense taken...:) With the problems endured we will have a lot of work to do, but we will be adding some new stuff...it won't replace racing but it will hopefully pass the day a little easier....

If you think a good rotating assembly is going to put you in the heat of things, you're wrong. The power is not in the short block, it's in the heads and cam.
I put my heads and cam in a stock short block with a descent set of pistons (440 grams) and the car went a 10.58 at the first race on it. Good short block was less than a tenth faster.

Gene...that's what i'm working on now..I'm gonna sell my FTI 165's i have now for a much better set of AFR's or Brodix heads...I do have a stock short block in my car it's just the internals that's the problem...I have to get the weight out somewhere...I know about the power in the heads & cam thing.

I told my buddies here in chicago that if they wanted to go in as partnership on a P/S or ?? class we can do it but nobody wants to feel left out i wouldn't mind doing that...I think my guys here a scared of heads-up competition but i'm not but again these are the same guys that wanna bet on my car if i were to bring out on the street :D

Darin, if this is what ya wanna do, you can't give up. My first race I only went 11.60's. I had a "stock" bottom end run 10.80's and still use a stock block. It's all in the H.C.I. ooopppsss and carb ;) As a once great philosopher(Joe Dirt :) :D ) said; Keep on keeping on!!!!!!

You know what Teddy...I'm working on something right now that might help run maybe 4 races next year....I've talked to a few guys that might be able to help me out, so we'll see how it goes. Maybe the first midwest race "Martin MI will be ready to roll this time..I can't blame the chassis anymore so it's all in the powerplant Now.

You can always sell some parts and step down a class and join us in F/S.

It should be cheaper.
In my case it is.
Gene said about 20k for a top engine.
I know our engine is not even close to that price and I would consider it to be right there with the top pushrod engine in the class.

There will only be 7 NMRA races next year. KC has been dropped from the schedule. the Rt. 66 race will be a joint race with NMCA. Don't know what the other dropped event will be.

Darrin Good to here that you might keep it going. You right when you get in a car and drive it. You get that need for speed. I get it every time I drive my car. Evon though it's just in the parking lot. Driving it down the track is Amys job. If you need any help for next year give me a holler. Mike Hoppa

We can only hope you are correct. This lifestyle of racing and spending money without much payback is getting friggin old. I have held in there for about as long as I can, waiting on the pay to come up. Instead, everyhting else has increased, except what I was waiting on.
